Our History

Spartan Construction Company, Inc., opened its doors for business in 1980 in Toledo, Ohio. Strong working relationships with customers and excellence in masonry construction were the core values upon which the company was founded. The company’s founder, Pete VanDenBerghe, believed in pursuing these values by working hard to push the masonry industry forward in Toledo and the surrounding areas. Today, these same core values are what drive Spartan Construction to pursue excellence in the field of masonry and to grow the business to be an industry leader in the 21st century and beyond.

Our Scope of Work

The diversity of our work portfolio is a testament to the versatility of our workforce. The core of our workforce has been part of our team an average of 10 years. This continuity offers consistency in our processes in spite of the myriad of variables encountered on construction projects. Our masons are trained through a four-year apprenticeship program administered by the Toledo Area Bricklayers Apprenticeship Program. With over 430 hours of classroom training and 4800 hours of job site training, our masons are equipped to work with many different products. On average, we employ 20 to 30 masons year-round. While we may not be the largest mason contractor in the area, our size allows us the flexibility to pursue large multi-million dollar projects down to small one day projects.

Stone

Our masons have years of experience installing both natural stone and simulated stone products. The beauty and durability of stone products can often be overshadowed by improper installation techniques. Whether it's a fireplace, stone accent banding, or an entire stone façade, great care is taken in craftsmanship in order to satisfy the owner's intent.

Brick

Our masons are experienced with the installation of clay masonry products of all shapes and sizes. We strive to install each unit with the quality and care necessary to satisfy even the most discerning customer. History has proven that brick stands the test of time. At Spartan, we realize the skill and ability of our craftsman will be reflected for years to come alongside these enduring products.

Concrete Masonry

As with any product, the individual components used in creating the product must be installed in the correct manner in order for the product to function properly. Over the years, concrete masonry systems have evolved to include not only advanced structural properties, but also thermal resistance, water repellency, and moisture drainage. These components are all incorporated into a system which also offers limitless aesthetic value as a finished surface. Our craftsmen are continually trained in the proper installation of the various components and accessories which are incorporated into a complete masonry system. Whether it’s building a warehouse demising wall or a church entrance feature, we owe it to our customers to do the job as specified.

Alterations/Renovations

One aspect of our expertise which is often overlooked is masonry alterations and renovations. Anyone can spot a bad patch or repair job. Our goal with alterations and renovations is to perform the work so that alterations are indistinguishable from the original work. Over the years we've installed hundreds of new openings in existing masonry walls and infilled hundreds of existing openings in masonry walls. While the nature of the work may not be glamorous, it offers flexibility and cost savings to our customers through repurposing of existing construction.
